"Access to Dental Care Act" introduced in NM

Support HB 264

New Mexico continues to face a dental care crisis. One-in-three kids sit in class with untreated tooth decay. 32 of 33 counties in New Mexico face dental care provider shortages, leaving thousands of people in New Mexico without access the dental care they need. Pain and suffering that could be addressed with basic dental care remains untreated. HB 264 creates a workforce solution to the dental care crisis.

Last year, advocates, dental hygienists, and dentists came to an unprecedented agreement to license and train dental therapists in New Mexico. Dental therapists are locally trained dental professionals who provide quality, affordable, preventive and routine dental care services, and bring jobs and economic opportunities to underserved and rural communities. Dental therapists are now providing high quality care in six states and dozens of other countries. A recent poll found that 80 percent of voters support dental therapists. This agreement could vastly expand access to dental care in New Mexico.

HB 264 will be heard first in the House Health and Human Services Committee. Please encourage members of the committee to support the Access to Dental Care Act. All people in New Mexico deserve access to dental care. Together, we can make it a reality.
